Since it first started in March of 2016, the respiratory program at Kingston of Miamisburg entitled Breathe Easy: Respiratory Health and Wellness has been changing the lives of patients suffering breathing ailments.
Created by experts, including Travis Grasely, the Regional Director of Respiratory Care at Kingston HealthCare Company, and Shereen Baily, the Director of Respiratory care at Kingston of Miamisburg, this 10-week outpatient program eases the symptoms of chronic lung conditions, including:
- Chronic Bronchitis
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Pulmonary Fibrosis.
“The primary goals of our Breathe Easy program are to increase patient activity levels with less shortness of breath and less respiratory-related illnesses,” said Grasley, who is also the President of the Ohio Society of Respiratory Care.
The program focuses on teaching patients how to breathe properly and incorporating those techniques into everyday life. By the end of the program, patients should no longer become breathless while completing everyday tasks.
In one case, a patient who started the program was not able to walk for longer than two minutes on a treadmill without taking a break. By the end of the program he was able to walk around an entire city block without stopping. Furthermore, doctors no longer recommended he have lung-reduction surgery because his breathing improved so dramatically.
Patients must have a doctor referral to take part in the program. But before they begin the 10-week regimen, Grasley cautions that it is not ideal for everyone
“Patients must have a desire to participate and not just be coming because their spouse or children want them to get therapy,” said Grasley. “It takes hard work, time, and dedication in order to reap benefits, so those who aren’t motivated will not get much out of the program.”
